How to Behave Properly at Your Next Christmas Party

The Christmas party might be the perfect opportunity to have a few drinks and let your hair down, but with this comes the danger of loose inhibitions and actions which could get you noticed for all of the wrong reasons.

By all means, you should celebrate the end of the year and take the opportunity to spend time with colleagues in a relaxed and informal environment. You shouldn't, however, go to the Christmas party with the express aim of getting drunk. Just because you're not paying for the drinks, it doesn't mean that you should drink far more than you normally would.

If you are drinking alcohol, know your limit and stick to it. There's nothing wrong about having a soft drink now and again, even at a Christmas party, and if you feel under a lot of peer pressure, you could always make an excuse about having something to do the next day if necessary.

If you are drinking, make sure that it's not on an empty stomach. There's usually plenty of food available at a Christmas party, so make sure that you eat as well as drink.

Try and be aware of who you are talking to at all times, keep your conversation light, and try not discuss anything controversial; in order to avoid upsetting anyone.

Make the most of the opportunity the Christmas party presents to mix with all of your colleagues. Try and mingle with people you wouldn't normally talk to, rather than spend all evening with your workmates.

If you feel that you've had enough of the Christmas party, and that it's time to call it a night, there's no shame in leaving early, as long as it's not too early as to cause offence.

The most important thing to remember though is to have fun! Many people will have gone to a lot of time and effort to make sure that the Christmas party is a success. If it's a good night, people will still be talking about it next year.
