Christmas Party Etiquette from Revolution
If you've never been to a Christmas party before, or if you made a bit of a show of yourself last years do, the following are some helpful pointers to ensure that you don't embarrass yourself this festive season.
Dress appropriately – If you're been invited to the Christmas Party and you're going, make the effort. If the dress code is smart casual, go for more smart than casual. If it's fancy dress, make the effort and do it properly. If it's black tie, then you will need to look very smart. Still, who wouldn't want to look like they'd just stepped off a James Bond film set!
Remember your table manners – If you are having a sit down Christmas dinner at your do, make sure that you observe the normal conventions of formal dining. A lot can be learned about a person from their table manners, even at the Christmas party!
Try not to talk about work unless you really have to – The Christmas party isn't the time to put forward your new product ideas, or financial predictions for the coming year. Nobody's going to be interested.
Don't overly praise the boss, or undermine colleagues – Nobody will be impressed, and it may go against you when it comes to appraisal time.
Try to avoid arguments and Christmas party gossip – There's nothing wrong with making conversation, and getting on with people, but don't start talking about contentious issues just to get a response.
Don't get drunk – If you think you might be getting drunk, change to soft drinks, or call it a night.
Stay away from the mistletoe – You probably won't end up kissing the person you want to, and you'll be disappointed!
Now you know how to behave, you've got no excuses for making a show of yourself at this year's Chrsitmas party!
