How To Survive Your Christmas Party
The Christmas party might not be your favourite time of year. Perhaps you barely get on with your colleagues, let alone socialise with them, so spending a whole evening with them might not be your idea of fun. If this is the case, then the following are some useful tips to help you survive this festive season.
Dress appropriately – By making sure that you dress appropriately for the Christmas party you won't attract unnecessary attention, or stand out for the wrong reasons. If it says smart casual, then that's what you need to wear.
Don't arrive late – There's always somebody who turns up late, or has to make a big entrance at the Christmas party. Don't let it be you. Also, remember that you won't be popular if you arrive halfway through the meal.
Think about how much you're drinking – Just because it's a Christmas party and the drink is free, doesn't mean that you have to drink lots. There's nothing wrong with alternating soft drinks or water with your wine or cocktails.
Bite your tongue – The Christmas party is definitely not the right time or place to have a go at someone. Whether you've never got on with somebody in accounts, or you think your boss is an idiot, there are better times, places and ways of letting your feelings be known. If you're not a big fan of your colleagues, why not get to know people from other departments better? The Christmas party is a great opportunity to talk to people who you don't normally talk to. Why not spend a few minutes getting to know the person you email regularly?
Don't talk shop – Surely you must be able to find something else to talk about at the Christmas party? Ask people what they do when they aren't at work, or about their holidays, favourite films or music. You might find that you've got a lot more in common than you first thought.
Avoid romantic liaisons – If you weren't attracted to the person during your working week, there's no reason to think that that they are more attractive just because it's the Christmas party, and you've both been drinking. Also, it can make being back at work very difficult.Book your taxi in advance - If you're smart, you'll book your taxi in advance, so that there's no waiting around when the Christmas party is over, and you'll not be tempted to go somewhere afterwards.
Most importantly of all, have a good night! The Christmas party should be a fun time, and if you don't usually enjoy it, perhaps you will this year!
